Florida State University - A Permanent Solution for
Leaking Community Showers

The Campus
Deviney Hall, Florida State University
Tallahassee, Florida

The Problem
Three large community showers in the Deviney Residence Hall on the Florida State University campus were leaking and had cracked wall tiles. Faced with time consuming
and expensive demolition and replacement, Maintenance Management turned to Miracle Method for a more cost effective alternative.

The Miracle Method Solution
Upon examination, it was determined that water was trapped beneath the tile. MiraSeal, a Miracle Method high-tech resin system that cures underwater, was proposed to solve the leaking problem without removing the tile. This solution has proven to be successful in solving similar problems at Florida Atlantic University, The University of Texas, Rowan University and several others.

The Process
The showers were completely cleaned using a two-step process to kill mold and remove all soap scum, body oils and mineral deposits. Damaged tile grout was repaired and MiraSeal was then applied to the leaking shower pans. As the resin seeped into the grout, existing moisture was displaced and the shower pans were sealed. The need to take the shower pans out of service for several days to “dry out” was eliminated and, after curing for 24-hours, the showers were ready for refinishing. Miracle Method’s Natural Accents stone-look finish was applied along with several clear coats to waterproof the surface. The showers were returned to service in only three days.

The Result
FSU Maintenance loved the results and will “test” the showers until the summer of 2011. Once this testing period is complete, the remaining Deviney Hall showers will be turned over to Miracle Method for sealing and refinishing.
